Denis Brun, a soon-to-be-huge artist had a chance to hold an exhibition along with Jogjakarta’s best artists on May 26-29 at LIP Jogjakarta. The exhibition entitled “Yogyakarta Uber-Alles” was part of Printemp Francais or France Spring Season, an annual art exhibition series held by LIP Jogjakarta. Mr.Brun also collaborated with many artists to express his art spirit. He also works on many media such as video, collage, ceramics, acrylics, and so on. He designed a cool unique dress with Simponi Mode Group and composed a contemporary-experimental music with Disko Wishes. Disko Wishes consists of three musician playing bass, keyboard/synth, and laptop which include a top-notch visual art on a giant screen. They brought 5 songs on their set list at the beginning of the opening night on 26 of May.

After a great performance from Disko Wishes, the exhibition room – located on the right side of the auditorium – was opened. Inside we can see the finest work of arts from LoveHateLove, Denis Brun, Terra Bajraghosa on different platforms. There are painted-raincoat and painted t-shirts, and other great paintings from Lovehatelove, a young talented and potential graffiti artist from Jogjakarta.

Before ran this exhibition, this Marseille-based artist had stayed in Jogjakarta for two months to learn about the people, customs and culture in every corner of the city. This exhibition though, is the presentation of the process of assimilation that he did during the adaptation and learning. After this exhibition, he had been scheduled to hold another art exhibition in Surabaya. (Adi Renaldi)

TEXSTYLE – FABRIC ART EXHIBITION

Probably there ain’t much to tell on this one-of–a-kind exhibition except, Fabulous!!! Both artsy taste and unique fabrics came along altogether. The Triumvirate blends many sophisticated style on sophisticated fabrics as well. From Batik to cotton, pillow to beautiful dress. All were combined into very unique mixtures. Perhaps, we can also call it TEXTILE IN STYLE for sure. As a matter of fact, an exhibition such this is almost hard to find nowadays, since there aren’t much fiber/fabric artists who held an exhibition. On the other hand, exhibition such as paintings, installation, sculptures, are definitely huge and gaining more and more appreciation. Thus, by holding this event, they wanted to speak their “invisible” existence through their art. Of course, after we saw one of their works, we’ll be amused and amazed.

Caroline Rika (32), Abdul Syukur Syam (30) and Rifqi Sukma (29) are graduates from FSR ISI, majoring Textile Crafts, and they put great concerns on the medium. Each has different aesthetic inclinations and exploration techniques. Fiber in Rika’s hands becomes ‘jumputan’ (a tie-dye technique), in assorted cute rounded forms. Abdul Syukur created a number of unique knots into three-dimensional objects. Rifqi embroidered and sequined fabrics into textured surfaces.

The three approaches fabric with explorative manners. Rifqi uses polyester and cotton. Abdul uses synthetic textile colorants to give colors. Rika also uses Naphtol and Indigosol to give colors. She applies ‘truntum’ motif in forming the bird patterns, which in this case is using batik-print technique. She also uses embroideries in attaching labels on her works.

Their artworks’ visual forms are different from the usual fiber art that people commonly see in the batik art or tapestry. In modern terms, their artworks are demonstrating contemporary forms. It means, the way they work is not restricted by the traditional style and rules. These form explorations bring forth the shape of personal expressions, constructing unique stylizations and styles. In this case, we could appreciate their artworks as the window of opportunity in doing many new form explorations. Thread in this case becoming an object work, assembled from various types of materials. The Javanese spiritual form, that usually appears in Batik – known for its long and hard process – is shown in a sophisticated transformation without losing its root. Batik, can also be combined with other style of fabrics and coloring techniques.

This is the exhibition that displays explorations of medium, and at the same time as a sign that fiber art itself, in their explorations, acquires fresh and expressive forms. The forms—born from the process of ‘jumputan’, knotting, embroidery, and sequin—are not merely a bunch of threads, but also texts that everyone can see them in their conceptual context. Struggle for Existence, teori masyhur Charles Darwin tersebut sedikit banyak mampu menggambarkan kondisi Seni Wayang kita. Seperti yang disampaikan oleh keempat seniman wayang pada pembukaan pameran “How Art Lives” di gelaran Festival Kesenian Yogyakarta XXI pada Sabtu, 20 Juni lalu. Para seniman wayang tersebut membeberkan perjuangan sekaligus kegetiran mereka dalam melestarikan seni pembuatan wayang yang menurut mereka sangat jauh dari nilai profit.

Meski pameran kali ini tak hanya melulu menampilkan kesenian wayang, berbagai seni instalasi, patung, dan lukisan juga ditampilkan sebagai bagian integral dari masyarakat. Pameran ini juga mengadvokasi kembali, kemandirian masyarakat dalam menghidupkan kembali hasil-hasil seni yang sempat hidup dalam masyarakt setempat. Seni rupa dianggap sebagai representasi konteks sosial yang saat ini dikuasai oleh hegemoni budaya barat.

Meski sempat menuai kritik karena penyelenggaraannya yang agak melenceng dari konsep semula, Festival Kesenian Yogyakarta XXI masih menunjukkan tajinya, diukur dari antusiasme pengunjung yang datang dari tiap sudut kota maupun luar. Meski hal tersebut belum bisa dijadikan parameter akan kualitas, namun dengan hadirnya pameran How Art Lives kali ini, seni rupa di Jogjakarta pada khususnya mampu menunjukkan identitas dan geliat seni yang kritis dan bergairah.

Dari 400 karya yang masuk, 121 diantaranya berhak tampil diajang pameran ini. Seniman baik senior maupun muda “bergelut” dengan berbagai media ekspresi. Kuil Dairin, sebuah studio kecil di pinggir kota Jogja membawa jargon “seni lukis untuk semua”, dengan menampilkan sesudut studionya dalam sebuah karya instalasi. Studio ini menjadi magnet berkumpulnya anak-anak muda Jogja yang gelisah dan melek seni. Salah seorang seniman muda berbakat Farid Stevy Asta menampilkan identitasnya dalam aksentuasi tokoh seorang rockstar. Lain lagi dengan Cangkang Serigala yang menampilkan karya instalasi berupa foto-foto lengkap dengan pigura yang menyatakan identitasnya sebagai remaja thrash metal. Tiap foto bercerita tentang sepak terjang mereka lengkap dengan berbagai manusia pendukungnya.

Para seniman yang tergabung dalam pameran kali ini memang mencoba untuk merangkum konteks sosial maupun jaman dalam melakukan penjelajahan atas bentuk visualisasi masa lalu. Tradisi ornamen klasik menjadi bagian yang dieksplorasi dan tetap relevan dengan kondisi masyarakat kontemporer masa kini. Sehingga definisi seni rupa itu tetap terjaga maknanya terlepas dari kemauan pasar dan nilai nominal.
